Good news! With most keyboard apps, you can already type accented letters quite easily: long-press the corresponding non-accented letter, and select the accented letter you need from the popup.

For example, to type ä, first press a:

Keep a pressed for a moment until the popup appears:

While keeping your finger on the screen, move until ä is highlighted, and release your finger.
